Life can be overwhelming sometimes. So, in this devotional, we’ll read Comforting Bible Verses about Anxiety and Depression. Each scripture will help us tackle the hard truth of the darkness of the world and lead us into God’s comforting embrace.
What does the Bible say about Anxiety?
Many American adults face issues with mental illness in their everyday lives. In fact, clinical depression and anxiety are the most common mental health disorders in the United States. And suffering from one or both isn’t something to take lightly.
I’m one of those Americans who deal with anxiety and depression daily. In fact, I’ve dealt with anxiety attacks and times of deep depression for as long as I can remember.
I began having debilitating panic attacks when I was eight years old. They were triggered by trauma I suffered at school. Then I had a reprieve from their torment for a few years.
However, the anxiety attacks came back with a vengeance in my teen years. It was so bad at one point that I couldn’t even leave the house!
The symptoms of depression followed soon after the panic attacks begin. That’s how it usually works.
Because these two, anxiety and depression, go together like peanut butter and jelly, or cake and icing. Although they are not so sweet.
But really, is it any wonder why so many of us face dark times in the world today?
With so much going on in the news the past few years, it’s easy to lose heart.
But God’s Word gives us the assurance that better times are ahead. And that He has good things in store for those who love Him!
If you’re experiencing anxiety or depression these scriptures will calm your fears and give you the strength to go on.
Best Bible Verses to Calm Anxiety
God’s perspective on the anxiety I feel has changed the way I look at my panic disorder. With His help, instead of seeing it as a thorn in my side I began to see it as a gift.
I know when you’re in the midst of an anxiety attack it’s hard to think of it as a gift. I couldn’t either. But all these years later, I can see how God was shaping me into the person He created me to be.
So, I want to share with you some of my favorite Bible Verses for anxiety. Each one has helped me get through the hard times. And I know they will calm your anxiety too.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Isaiah 41:10 NKJV
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 NKJV
You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
Isaiah 26:3 New King James Version
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Philippians 4:19 NKJV
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Matthew 6:25-34 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27 ESV
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15 ESV
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJV
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down,
but a good word makes him glad.
Proverbs 12:25 ESV
So we may boldly say:
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?”
Hebrews 13:6 NKJV
But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
For I am the Lord your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I gave Egypt for your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in your place.
Isaiah 43:1-3 NKJV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”
Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it. And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
Deuteronomy 31:6-8 NKJV
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”
Isaiah 35:4 ESV
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

The easiest way to pray is to use the Word of God as a starting point. These next verses will help you begin praying during your next moment of anxiety or depression.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
James 5:13-15 NKJV
