I know, it seems like a strange place for them. But the rows and rows of grapevines are breathtaking in late summer. Their deep purple fruit and emerald green leaves always make me think of the words of Jesus in John’s gospel.

Just like a vine needs to be rooted in the ground to grow, we need to be grounded in Jesus to grow our faith and live a life that is pleasing to God.
Then, we will be like the graceful branches of the grapevine, gently swaying in the breeze but firmly grounded in in the soil.
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

The Consequences of Not Abiding in Jesus

Jesus is clear that apart from Him, we can do nothing. If we try to live our lives without Him, we won’t be able to accomplish anything of lasting value.
Plus, when we chose not to abide in Jesus, we miss out on the benefits of having a close relationship with Him. The joy, peace, and love that come from being in His presence won’t be available to us. And our faith will fade instead of growing as it would if we were abiding in Him, the true vine.
Jesus offered us this sobering reminder of the consequences of not abiding in Him.
If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

Long before the baby Jesus was born in a manger, the Old Testament prophet Joel wrote about bearing fruit. His message was a warning to turn to God and find salvation in Him. Then, He will heal our land and it will again bear abundant fruit.
At first glance, these scriptures are about the judgment of God on the people of ancient Israel. And they are.
But ultimately, this prophecy points to the coming Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ who is our vine. And it reminds us of the importance of staying connected to Jesus.
Through the life-giving connection you have with Jesus, you’ll experience His love, joy, and peace, as you will bear fruit that glorifies God every day.

The Parable of the Sower
In the New Testament book of Matthew, Jesus taught us the Parable of the Sower.
In this story, Jesus is the Sower, and the seed is the Word of God. Jesus is planting God’s Word in the good ground of our hearts so that it will take root and grow into a beautiful fruit bearing tree.
I like to think of it like an apple tree. Because it takes a long time for it to bear bright red fruit that is big enough to harvest. But when it does, the finished product is amazing!
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
The Parable of the Vinedressers
Jesus told the Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers to teach us the consequence of rejecting the gospel.
At its core, this story is about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. In it, Jesus illustrates the gospel message perfectly. The vineyard represents God’s promise of the Messiah, and the vinedressers are the people of Israel.
In the parable, the vinedressers sought to kill the son and take his inheritance. This is a clear reference to the Jewish leaders who would crucify Jesus believing that they were saving Judaism.
However, God’s plan and promise to save us from sin and death could not be thwarted by anyone. Because God willed it and Jesus obeyed, He died and rose again giving us the gift of eternal life.
And now, we can choose to accept this gift of grace or not. But this story serves to remind us today that choosing to reject the Son of God will only lead to spiritual death.
But He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out. Now the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ But when the vine-growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and put these vine-growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said, “May it never happen!”
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
As you can see the metaphor of Jesus as the vine is a powerful reminder of our dependence on Him for everything we need to live a fruitful life. By remaining connected to Him and bearing fruit, we can grow in our faith and bring glory to God.
