Why do we celebrate Christmas? In this devotional, we’ll read Luke 2:14 and unwrap 3 Exciting Reasons to Celebrate Christmas!
It’s Christmastime, and the excitement of the season is here!
The Christmas tree is decorated, the cookies are baking, and the stockings are hung by the fire. As the song says, it’s the most wonderful time of year!
Like everyone, I’m excited to see family and friends and take a break from the ordinary day-to-day.
And this Bible Verse from Luke 2 gives us three wonderful reasons to be excited to celebrate Christmas this year…
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!
What does Luke 2:14 mean?
You can almost hear the excitement ringing out as the angels proclaimed… Glory to God in the highest!
But what were they so excited about?
The birth of baby Jesus! Of course!
How do Christians celebrate the joyous occasion of Christ’s birth? In this scripture, from Luke 2, the angels showed us three ways.
So, let’s worship our Savior and celebrate His birth by following their example together.

Give Glory to God
The angels understood the birth of Jesus was God’s promise to give us the Messiah fulfilled. And they knew one day this tiny baby would die on a cross to save us from our sins.
Praising and glorifying God was a natural extension of recognizing His amazing gift to mankind.
The day we understand Jesus died for us personally and decide to accept Him as our Savior is cause for a huge celebration!
And the Bible tells us the angels are in heaven celebrating the victory of Jesus every time someone is saved.
Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
As Christians, December 25th is the day we celebrate this change in our lives. It’s more than a tradition and it’s bigger than the holiday season.
Instead, it’s about remembering what Jesus did for us when He came to earth that day. And giving Glory to God for His indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15
Because as the popular Christmas quote goes… Jesus is the reason for the season!
Together, let’s give glory to God and worship Him just like the angels.

Have Peace on Earth
The angels celebrated the gift of Jesus knowing with Him we have peace on earth from the Prince of Peace Himself.
In the Bible Verse from Isaiah 9, we learn this wonderful name of Jesus…
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.
The baby born to save us is a prince unlike any other. Jesus is the Prince of Peace sent to give us peace on earth.
The Christmas season is busy and a little hectic. There’s so much to do in a short amount of time. And peace may be the last thing on our shopping list.
But Jesus gives us peace. Real peace that stays with us year-round. He alone is our source of peace. And the One we can turn to when life seems anything but peaceful.
In Him, we have true and lasting peace.
And the Peace of Christ is a gift for us to share during this holiday season.
So, let’s have peace in our hearts and pass it around along with that cute Christmas cookie platter we all adore.

Show Goodwill to Men
And lastly, the angels knew God’s goodwill would be received by those of us who believe in His Son.
Jesus is the gateway to the Father. And He opened the gate to eternal life when He was born here on earth.
Jesus is the Way, the Only Way to heaven. Through faith in Him, we receive the goodwill of God, the free gift of grace, and eternity with Him in heaven.
Here’s how Jesus described it…
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
The angels sang the praise of Jesus, the Way to everlasting life because they knew the enormity of this great gift.
This truth is the reason we celebrate the birth of Christ each December. Without the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we wouldn’t have a Way to eternal life.
And it all started with the first breath of baby Jesus.
So, let’s show God’s goodwill to men by sharing our faith in God’s Son this Christmas.
The Real Reason We Celebrate Christmas
The love of God for mankind and the love of Jesus to sacrifice Himself is the real reason we celebrate Christmas. The gift of saving grace they give to us is the greatest we’ll ever receive.
How many people are there in our lives who need to unwrap this gift?
While you’re wrapping those Christmas presents, I encourage you to think of those on your list. And to reflect with me on the angel’s joy and excitement over our greatest gift, Jesus.
And I pray these 3 Exciting Reasons to Celebrate Christmas inspire you to share your faith this holiday season.
May the excitement of the season fill your heart this Christmas and always!
