I recently came across some articles that claimed the power of prayer is a mysterious force. Honestly, I don’t believe that. Prayer isn’t a mystery that we can’t comprehend. Like most things with God, it’s simple and easy to understand.

James 5:16 reveals a deep truth that, once we grasp it, unlocks the tremendous power of prayer. This scripture not only brings us closer to God but also is very easyto understand.

It says, “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Let’s focus on two key parts of this verse: the ‘righteous person’ and the ‘effective, fervent prayer.’

The ‘righteous person’ doesn’t mean we need to be perfect or flawless to pray. It’s about striving to live in alignment with God’s Word, demonstrating the love and teachings of Jesus Christ every day. It’s this sincere pursuit of righteousness that allows our prayers to gain their true strength.

Because prayer has the power to make things happen, not because of our strength, but because we’ve been declared righteous through our faith in Jesus. Christ alone is the reason that our prayers have power! So, let’s take a look at the role righteousness plays in our prayer life.

Sometimes we wonder about the effectiveness of our prayers and whether or not they touch the heart of God. Through the lens of righteousness, we can see why our prayers are so powerful. It’s not about words, it’s about living a righteous life that reflects the righteousness of Jesus, the Son of God. Because we’ve been saved by grace through faith, God the Father calls us His sons and daughters and hears our prayers.  So, it’s the salvation we have in Jesus that ultimately gives strength to our prayers.

We also find righteousness when we align our lives with the truth of the gospel message and follow the scriptures. Then our prayers go beyond simple wishes and become vessels of the tremendous saving power of God’s grace. It’s like planting our lives in the fertile soil of the many beautiful scripture quotations, creating a direct connection with God’s plan and will for our lives. This alignment creates a prayer life that has wonderful results, showing that a life lived in God’s righteousness turns prayers into powerful conversations with the Lord.

Examples of the Power of Prayer in the Bible

The Holy Bible tells us that the effective prayer of a righteous man avails much, showing us the incredible power of petitioning God with a genuine heart. The prophets of Baal saw this tremendous power of prayer for themselves through Elijah’s effectual prayer on Mt. Carmel.

Let’s look at the example of Elijah as this Old Testament prophet puts the power of prayer into action…

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed ^​earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. ^​Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.

Elijah believed in God and therefore was a righteous man. He asked God to show Himself to a generation led astray by King Ahab by withholding the rain for three and a half years.

Through his unshakable faith, Elijah shows us the meaning of fervent prayer and how it avails much. He didn’t just say a little prayer every now and then. He prayed continually and earnestly that God would keep the rain from falling. Then he prayed a heartfelt plea for the Lord to bring the rain. In both circumstances, the Lord heard and answered Elijah’s prayers. The end of the drought showcased the power of a righteous man’s effective prayer, demonstrating the amazing things God can do through a heart that seeks His will. Because of our faith in Jesus, we’re righteous in God’s eyes, making our prayers effective and powerful tools too. We just need to practice the same kind of faithful, consistent, and fervent prayer that Elijah did. Then the results will be undeniable.

Is there real power in prayer?

The answer is a simple yes. But for us to see the power of prayer in our lives we must first believe in it and have faith in God. This is where the real power comes from… our faith. Let’s learn directly from our precious Savior about this important aspect of our faith.

Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. ^​Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

In this verse, Jesus emphasized believing in the power of prayer and having faith that God will not only hear our prayer but answer it too. Sometimes we pray but we don’t actually believe that anything will happen. Or we think our problems are too big, too small, too whatever for God. We have a “wing and a prayer” mentality. Kind of like luck or happenstance. Maybe our prayers are heard and maybe they’re not.

But what Jesus is talking about is the condition of our hearts. Do we believe deep down inside that God will hear our prayers? Do we have faith that God will answer us? Because if we want to see the real power of prayer, we must truly believe in our hearts that He will.

Beyond just believing, we can also have confidence in the power of prayer. Here’s an open invitation from God to us…

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Prayer isn’t a last resort, even though sometimes we may see it that way. When something bad happens, we try to fix it on our own and only turn to prayer once our efforts have failed. If this is you, please believe me, I’m guilty of this too!

But prayer is not our last hope. Instead, it’s our greatest offense and our best option in every circumstance. No matter what’s going on in our lives, good or bad, God wants to hear about it. There’s no need to worry about if it’s okay to pray or how our prayers will be received. We can boldly take all of our problems right to God’s throne of grace in our time of need, knowing He will help us.

• Pray in faith, believing in great things: Trust in the wonderful results Jesus promises to those who pray believing they will receive.

• Seek righteousness in Christ Jesus: Your prayer life flourishes when you live righteously through the power of the Holy Spirit, aligning with the righteousness of God revealed in the New Testament gospel of faith in Jesus Christ.
• Invoke the name of the Lord in your prayers: Recognize the authority and power in Jesus’ name, making every prayer in His name an avenue of our Heavenly Father’s will.

Evidence of the Power of Prayer

In my life, I’ve seen the power of prayer many times. But never more than when my mom had cancer. The doctors gave her about three months to live, however, God gave us three more years together. And I have no doubt it was the power of prayer at work. So many people were praying for my mom. Our family, friends, two churches, and even people we didn’t know. They were all praying for her earnestly and faithfully.

And guess what… God heard their prayers. He listened and He cared. He knew that our family was in need and He never let us down. During this time God allowed me to experience the power of prayer firsthand. I could see that prayer is the solution to all of life’s problems and how we can have complete confidence in taking everything to Him in prayer.

So, the power of prayer isn’t a mysterious thing after all. We’re simply having a conversation with a loving and faithful God.

Isn’t it amazing to know that the Creator of the universe, the One True God who spoke the world into motion wants to speak to you? God loves you and He wants to hear from you.
