                                   Luke 12:33 NIV

Now let’s go deeper into God’s Word and discover what He wants us to know about tithing.

The best place to begin is…

First time Tithe is mentioned in the Bible

In Leviticus 27, the tithe is first introduced into law. This scripture is a reminder that all we have comes from God. And we learn the act of giving back one tenth to Him is holy to the Lord.

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the Lord.

Leviticus 27:30 New King James Version

Why does the Bible tell us to tithe?

Paying tithes is bigger than just giving ten percent of what we earn to the church. When we offer our tithes to God, we are acknowledging what He has given us.

It’s because of God’s hand working in our lives that we have the ability to make a living, to begin with. And when we understand this fact, we move beyond simply getting by and start growing true wealth.

The truth is, God isn’t concerned with money. And money isn’t what tithing is really about. It’s what is in our hearts that God truly cares about.

He understands our concerns about daily living and our desire for security. He knows we see money as our way to a secure future. And He wants to give us want we need to survive the day-to-day and so much more.

But He also wants to give us a different kind of security that lasts through the ages.

So, here are some tithing scriptures that remind us God is the source of our wealth and security.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power

and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,

for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;

you are exalted as head over all.

Wealth and honor come from you;

you are the ruler of all things.

In your hands are strength and power

to exalt and give strength to all.

                                 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 NIV

You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

                                 Deuteronomy 8:18 ESV

Where did tithing 10% come from?

We’ve been taught in church that a tithe is 10 percent of our earned income. But where does that number come from? In these Bible verses about tithing 10 percent, we learn about the tenth part or tithe presented to God as holy.

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,  so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God,  and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”

                                Genesis 28:20-22 ESV

The entire tithe of the herd and flock– every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd‘s rod– will be holy to the LORD.

                                   Leviticus 27:32 NIV

When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.

                                   Deuteronomy 26:12 NIV

And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

    Possessor of heaven and earth;

and blessed be God Most High,

who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth,  that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’

                                   Genesis 14:19-23 ESV

Bible Verse about Robbing God

Is not tithing robbing God? In Malachi 3 we learn the answer to this pressing question is… yes! God sees withholding our tithe as robbing Him.

And the consequences of robbing God are dire.

Because, if we continually rob God of our tithe, we are also robbing God of glory. When we decide not to tithe, we are depriving ourselves of His glory in our lives. And taking away the great blessings He wants to give us. Ultimately, we are robbing ourselves.

But when we combine both of these Bible verses about tithing from Malachi 3 below we see the Lord’s generosity poured out to those who offer tithes to Him.

Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

                                    Malachi 3:7-9 King James Version

I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.

                                     Malachi 3:11-12 NIV

If a man wishes to redeem some of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it.

                                   Leviticus 27:31 ESV

Old Testament Verses on Tithing in the Bible

During Old Testament times, the people lived under the Law of Moses. And tithing was an important part of the law of the Lord.

The word tithe may not be our favorite in the English language. But what we do as Christians matters! As God’s people, it is important for us the follow God’s law to the letter.

So, in these Old Testament verses about tithes and offerings, we will read about the importance of giving back. Each one shows us how God uses His people to continue the work of the Kingdom through building the church, paying ministers, giving to the poor, and so much more.

And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and brought the Lord’s contribution to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. So they came, both men and women. All who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and armlets, all sorts of gold objects, every man dedicating an offering of gold to the Lord.

                                  Exodus 35:21-22 ESV

To the sons of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel as an inheritance, in return for their service which they perform, the service of the tent of meeting.

                                  Numbers 18:21 NASB

“Moreover, you shall speak and say to the Levites, ‘When you take from the people of Israel the tithe that I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present a contribution from it to the Lord, a tithe of the tithe.

                                  Numbers 18:26 ESV

You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.

                                 Deuteronomy 14:22-23 ESV

“Come to Bethel, and transgress;

to Gilgal, and multiply transgression;

bring your sacrifices every morning,

your tithes every three days;

offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened,

and proclaim freewill offerings, publish them;

for so you love to do, O people of Israel!”

declares the Lord God.

                                 Amos 4:4-5 ESV

And he commanded the people who lived in Jerusalem to give the portion due to the priests and the Levites, that they might give themselves to the Law of the Lord. As soon as the command was spread abroad, the people of Israel gave in abundance the firstfruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and of all the produce of the field. And they brought in abundantly the tithe of everything.

                                2 Chronicles 31:4-5 ESV

Then they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes and dedicated gifts.

                                2 Chronicles 31:12 NIV

And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes. From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites.

                                Nehemiah 12:43-44 NIV

In the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah all Israel gave the portions for the singers and the gatekeepers, a portion for each day. They also consecrated holy things for the Levites, and the Levites consecrated them for the children of Aaron.

                               Nehemiah 12:47 NKJV

All Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.

                               Nehemiah 13:12 NIV

Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.

                                 1 Kings 17:13-16

And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing,  and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.

                                     Exodus 36:3-7 ESV

“You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”

                                     Haggai 1:9-11 NIV

One who is slack in his work is brother to

one who destroys.

                                   Proverbs 18:9 NIV

The stingy are eager to get rich

and are unaware that poverty awaits them.

                                  Proverbs 28:22 NIV

With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities. Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple:

                                 1 Chronicles 29:2-3 NIV

and for the other gold and silver work to be done by the craftsmen. Now then, who will follow my example and give offerings to the Lord today?”

Then the family leaders, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the generals and captains of the army, and the king’s administrative officers all gave willingly. For the construction of the Temple of God, they gave about 188 tons of gold, 10,000 gold coins, 375 tons of silver, 675 tons of bronze, and 3,750 tons of iron. They also contributed numerous precious stones, which were deposited in the treasury of the house of the Lord under the care of Jehiel, a descendant of Gershon.

                                1 Chronicles 29:5-8 NLT

Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the Lord; and King David also rejoiced greatly.

                                 1 Chronicles 29:9 NKJV

Some of the heads of families, when they came to the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem, made freewill offerings for the house of God, to erect it on its site. According to their ability they gave to the treasury of the work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priests’ garments.

                                       Ezra 2:68-69 ESV

For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.

                                    Psalm 50:10-12 King James Version

Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you.

But a generous man devises generous things,

And by generosity he shall stand.

                                 Genesis 14:18 NKJV

We obligate ourselves to bring the firstfruits of our ground and the firstfruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord;

                                Nehemiah 10:35 ESV

As it is also written in the Law, we will bring the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, of our herds and of our flocks to the house of our God, to the priests ministering there.

                                Nehemiah 10:36 NIV

We will also bring the first of our dough, our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the new wine, and the oil to the priests at the chambers of the house of our God, and the tithe of our ground to the Levites, for the Levites are they who receive the tithes in all the rural towns.

                                   Nehemiah 10:37 NASB

On that day men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for the offerings, the first part of the harvest, and the tithes. Tithes and Offering Scriptures in the New Testament

Tithing in the New Testament is a lot like it was in Old Testament times. Christians still fund the work of the church and give to the needy. The difference is now we live under Messianic law.

Jesus changed everything when He died on the cross for our sins. And these tithes and offering scriptures give us a glimpse of His glory. Because when we obey the command to tithe, we are showing the world the love of Jesus for all people.

Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.  I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

                                      Luke 18:9-14 NKJV

In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,  they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.

                                     2 Corinthians 8:2-5 NIV

Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us—I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.

                                   2 Corinthians 8:7 NLT

I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.  For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

                                  2 Corinthians 8:8-9 ESV

And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. or if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.

                                   2 Corinthians 8:10-12 NIV

We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us, for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man.

                                    2 Corinthians 8:20-21 ESV

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

                                     Matthew 6:27-32 NIV

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.  They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

                                  Mark 12:41-44 NIV

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

                                  1 Timothy 6:6-8 NIV

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

                                   1 Timothy 6:9 ESV

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

                                  1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

                                  1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

                                   Hebrews 6:10 NIV

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

                                   Hebrews 7:1-2 King James Version

He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

                                   Hebrews 7:3 ESV

Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?

                                   Hebrews 7:11 ESV

And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham.

                                    Hebrews 7:5 ESV

Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.

                                    Galatians 6:6 NKJV

having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

                                    Colossians 2:14 NIV

For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the Holy Place by the high priest as an offering for sin are burned outside the camp.

                                 Hebrews 13:11 NASB

What did Jesus say about tithing?

Have you ever wondered, what did Jesus say about tithes and offerings?

The Savior taught us many things while He was with us here on earth. And tithing was no different.

Jesus has a lot to say about how we should tithe and what we should focus on.

Like God the Father, Jesus’ concern is not for money. Instead, He challenges us to store up treasures in heaven, meaning to do the work of God’s Kingdom rather than dwelling about financial matters.

In these Bible verses about tithing, Jesus encourages us to stop worrying about today and think about eternity.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

                                    Matthew 23:23 NIV

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

                                  Matthew 23:23 NKJV

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

                                    Matthew 6:1-4 NIV

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

                                      Luke 18:22-27 NIV

But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

                                       Luke 11:42 ESV

Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

                                     Matthew 19:21 NKJV

But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

                                     Luke 12:48 NKJV

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

                                 Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums.

What does Paul say about tithing?

The Apostle Paul encouraged generosity when he wrote to the church at Corinth. And his instructions to them are a great lesson for us too. In the following Bible Verses about tithing, we learn the importance of being a cheerful giver and serving the Lord with a generous spirit.

So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.  Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;

their righteousness endures forever.”

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.

                                2 Corinthians 9:5-13 NIV

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

                                1 Corinthians 16:2 NIV

I am a special messenger from Christ Jesus to you Gentiles. I bring you the Good News so that I might present you as an acceptable offering to God, made holy by the Holy Spirit.

                                  Romans 15:16 NLT

Bible Verses about Giving to Others

Have you heard the saying… sharing is caring? That’s what these next offering scriptures are all about.

Giving to others is a big part of our faith. And it’s an important part of God’s will for all Christians.

Our generosity to others, whether they’re fellow believers or not, is a direct reflection of God’s generosity to us. It’s through giving and sacrificing that we learn the depth of God’s grace in our own lives.

So, give generously and God will bless you greatly.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

                                       Luke 6:38 NIV

All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

                                       Acts 2:44-45 NIV

Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

                                      Romans 12:13

Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

                                     Hebrews 13:16 NIV

And you shall not neglect the Levite who is within your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance with you.

“At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in the same year and lay it up within your towns. And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your towns, shall come and eat and be filled, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.

                                 Deuteronomy 14:27-29

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

                                    Romans 12:1 NKJV

Those who give to the poor will lack nothing,

but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.

                                   Proverbs 28:27 NIV

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’  And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

                                  Matthew 25:35-40 ESV

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

                                      1 John 3:17 NLT

All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

                                      Galatians 2:10 NIV

“When you have finished laying aside all the tithe of your increase in the third year – the year of tithing – and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your gates and be filled,

                                    Deuteronomy 26:12 NKJV

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.

                                   2 Corinthians 8:1-5 ESV

There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

                                  Acts 4:34-35 ESV

How to Tithe Correctly

The book of Malachi along with an assist from Haggai teaches us how we should tithe.

In each verse below we learn about giving God our very best. Because God is good and He always offers us His best. So, shouldn’t we do the same for Him?

If you’re wondering how to tithe correctly, these scriptures will teach you what God has to say about giving tithes and offerings.

“A son honors his father,

And a servant his master.

If then I am the Father,

Where is My honor?

And if I am a Master,

Where is My reverence?

Says the Lord of hosts

To you priests who despise My name.

Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’

“You offer defiled food on My altar,

But say,

‘In what way have we defiled You?’

By saying,

‘The table of the Lord is contemptible.’

                                 Malachi 1:6-7 NKJV

When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.

“Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?”—says the Lord Almighty.

“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands.

                                 Malachi 1:8-10 NIV

“All except you. Instead of honoring me, you profane me. You profane me when you say, ‘Worship is not important, and what we bring to worship is of no account,’ and when you say, ‘I’m bored—this doesn’t do anything for me.’ You act so superior, sticking your noses in the air—act superior to me, God-of-the-Angel-Armies! And when you do offer something to me, it’s a hand-me-down, or broken, or useless. Do you think I’m going to accept it? This is God speaking to you!

                                 Malachi 1:12-13 MSG

“Cursed is the cheat who promises to give a fine ram from his flock but then sacrifices a defective one to the Lord. For I am a great king,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “and my name is feared among the nations!

                                 Malachi 1:14 NLT

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

                                 Malachi 3:10 NIV

“Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”

Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord.

                                      Haggai 1:5-8 NIV

No one should appear before the Lord empty-handed: Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you.

                                    Deuteronomy 16:16-17 NIV

What does God promise when you tithe?

When we tithe or give ten percent of what God has blessed us with, He promises to bless us in return. He will bless everything we do and give to us in abundance.

In fact, tithing is the one thing God says we can test him on! In every other circumstance, God says do not test Me!

But tithing is different. God wants to give us more than we could ever imagine. That doesn’t mean we’ll become millionaires or that we’ll never have to work again. It means God will take care of us in every area of life, financially and spiritually.

So, put God to the test and start tithing today! He promises you will see the results. And the blessing of the lord will be on you wherever you go!

The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.

                                 Deuteronomy 28:12 NIV

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!

                                    Malachi 3:10 NLT

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and put Me to the test now in this,” says the Lord of armies, “if I do not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.

                                    Malachi 3:10 NASB

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

                                    Romans 6:23 NKJV

Tithes and Offering Prayer

To end our study about tithing, I thought we should read some Bible Verses about Tithing that offer God praise for all He gives to us.

They both make a great prayer. Because praying scripture is a powerful way to speak with God.

So, use them as a starting point for prayer and see where they take you.

Now, our God, we give you thanks,

and praise your glorious name.

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

                              1 Chronicles 29:13-14 NIV

“O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have prepared to build You a house for Your holy name is from Your hand, and is all Your own. I know also, my God, that You test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here to offer willingly to You.

                            1 Chronicles 29:16-17 NKJV

My personal prayer is that these Inspiring Bible Verses about Tithing have been helpful and will encourage you to begin giving. And most of all, that you will see God’s hand blessing you today!

Where Should You Give Your Tithe?

It’s important to remember when you tithe you are giving to the Lord, not to a church or charity. And no matter where you tithe, God will be faithful to use this money for His Kingdom. But if you’re not sure where to send your tithe, I wanted to give you a few ideas…

#1 Your Home church.

Giving to the church you’re already a member of is always a great idea. It’s easy and God will use your tithe to support your local church and the surrounding community.

#2 A Local Deaf Church.

You might be surprised to learn that only 2% of deaf people worldwide have ever “heard” about Jesus. I know I was! And this makes the deaf community one of the most under evangelized groups of people.

It’s our job as Christians to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who need it. And giving to your local deaf church would be a wonderful way to do this and help out a church that is working within the deaf community to turn that sad 2% number around. Plus, deaf churches are greatly underfunded and could always use the help!

You can just Google to find a deaf church in your area.

Or you can give to this extraordinary church… Bethel Deaf Fellowship. I have a great relationship with this church and I know they would appreciate your tithe. And just in case you’re wondering… this is where I tithe.
