You Are God’s Masterpiece

You Are God's Masterpiece

Welcome to the final leg of our artistic journey of faith! If you missed the first two, The Master’s Hand, and God’s Muse, you can go back and read them from the beginning. See you when you get back…

Now the creative process begins…

A blank canvas stands on the easel.

Paint is mixed on the palette.

The muse is gracefully posed.

And the brushes are ready for the Master’s Hand.

The artist doesn’t hold back. He pours himself into the work knowing it will be a painstaking experience. But with hard work and determination, his greatest masterpiece will emerge.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

                                             Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

This verse is clear… You are God’s Masterpiece!

A priceless work of art carefully planned out and made according to the Master’s design. Each brush stroke inspired by His love and admiration for you.

Personally, it’s hard to see myself as a masterpiece. When I look in the mirror, I don’t see the same perfection I see on museum walls. Instead, I count every tiny flaw. And, believe me, there are a lot of them to choose from. So, I pick apart the masterpiece thinking I’m undeserving of the title.

Can you relate?

Comparison is hard too. In this social media obsessed world, all we see are the post worthy pictures of the perfect family vacation, the promotion at work, the shiny new car or house.

It’s easy to get caught up in the comparison trap. And it’s hard to understand how God could possibly say, “you are my masterpiece.”

But that’s exactly what you are…

devotional 7 Simple Ways to See God's Hand in Your Life

It didn’t happen suddenly or accidentally. The creative process was followed, and the work completed.

It started with a blank canvas. The moment God spun the world into motion, His master plan began to take shape. The intimate details of your life were accounted for as He sketched the outline of your being, painted your portrait, and carefully feathered in the background. He poured Himself into you, and over time, created the masterpiece that is you.

It was a painstaking process. And the final brushstroke of pure genius came as the nails were driven into the Savior’s hands.

It was the hard work of Jesus on the cross that made you a new being. He gave the very best of Himself that day, knowing you would emerge as His greatest masterpiece!

Now let’s dig deeper into that by reading the same verse from Ephesians again, this time from the NKJV translation…

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

This translation says we are God’s workmanship. It refers to the idea of building a great structure, a piece of architecture.

In this version God is the Master craftsman, building us from the ground up, turning us into the architect’s vision of a grand palace.

What I love most about this verse is the phrase, created in Christ Jesus… It was His blood that was poured out for us, His blood that painted the picture of victory in us, and His blood that created the masterpiece! Can I get an Amen!?

And His blood wasn’t shed without a purpose, this verse continues… for good work which God prepared beforehand. Like any great masterpiece, whether it’s a painting or architecture, there is a reason behind the creation.

You can bet, God didn’t make you just so you could hang on a gallery wall and look pretty. You were created in Christ Jesus for good works. This is the vision behind the creation of the masterpiece. It is your purpose here on earth to do good work for the kingdom of God! Good works that God prepared just for you before you were ever born.

So, if you look in the mirror and wonder, why on earth did God create me in the first place…

Remember you are the work of the Master Craftsman. Your purpose is found in Him.

You are a completed work of art for the ages. You are loved and adored by your Artist and Creator. He has poured Himself into creating you, and He will continue to do so every day! All because you are His Masterpiece.

TOMORROW: Each of these lessons, the Master’s Hand, God’s Muse, and You are a Masterpiece, have led up to the release of the Spring Collection 2019 from Master’s Hand Collection. I pray that each of these studies inspired you to search for God’s hand in your everyday life. Because it’s my heart’s desire for you to see His hand in the artwork and to feel His touch on your life! Please come back tomorrow when the Spring Collection arrives!

God’s Muse

God's Muse

A few short days ago we began our artistic journey of faith with The Master’s Hand. On our first stop along the path from blank canvas to masterpiece, we talked about the Old Masters and their influence on our lives. Then we discovered the One True Master and the impact He plays in the journey. If you missed The Master’s Hand, don’t worry,  you can still read it here.

Now, the second stop on our journey takes us to the inspiration behind the art.

I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.

                                             Psalm 143:5

Muse is a funny word and it’s not used much in our modern vocabulary.

It means to carefully, thoughtfully weigh something in our mind.

And it can also refer to an artist’s source of inspiration. It can be a person, a thought, a poem, an object, or whatever gives the artist inspiration and leads them into the creative process.

As an artist myself, this is the definition of muse I think of…

In my mind, I see a beautiful girl with flowing long hair and perfect porcelain skin. She’s sitting in an artist’s studio as he paints her portrait. She captivates the artist, gives him creativity and influences the work of his hands.

For centuries the relationship between artist and muse has played a crucial part in the creation of art. The artist chooses their muse carefully, drawing on the inspiration they provide. The muse poses for the artist for the love and admiration they gain as the inspiration behind the artist’s work. This relationship is immeasurable as the artist pours themselves into the muse painting their likeness and discovering new aspects of their character to draw inspiration from over time. As the art takes shape, they form an unbreakable bond and create a portfolio of gallery-worthy art.

But for us, Christians, the word muse takes on a deeper meaning.

Why? Because…

We are God’s muse. That’s a surprising thought, isn’t it? 😊

God is our Master, the artist creating an image of us. And we are His muse, posing for the picture, adored by our artist, and inspiring Him as He paints the portrait of our lives. It’s a relationship that plays a crucial role in the creation of the art.

devotional 7 Simple Ways to See God's Hand in Your Life

So, let’s reflect on it for a moment…

Sometimes it seems like the painting will never be complete. We’ll be sitting in the studio, posing forever.  And the love and admiration of our artist feels lightyears away. During these times, it’s easy to forget we are God’s muse, His beloved, and the inspiration behind all He does.

But God is still at work, even when we can’t see Him. He is pouring Himself into us, painting over what doesn’t belong, gently touching up the edges, and watching as the art take shape.

We are the reason He puts paint to canvas. The reason He creates. All because we are His muse, His inspiration, and the object of His affection.

The relationship between artist and muse is evident in my artwork too. But I’ve flipped it around a bit.

My muse, my inspiration, is God’s hand. This is what I think about each time I take a picture or sit down at my computer to work.

But it extends beyond me. The desire in my heart is for you to see God’s hand for yourself. That’s what motivates me to create. When you view my art, I want you to see God’s hand reaching out to you. I want you to feel His gentle touch on you.

Can you see it? Is there a place in your life where God’s hand is working?

Let His hand be your muse just as much as you are His. Be inspired by all God is doing in your life right now!

Because one day soon, you’ll look back and remember the days of old. You will see how God had a plan for your life and how it came to pass. You will muse on the work of God’s hands as you view your life from afar. And the longer you know the Lord, the more profound it will become.

The Master’s Hand

The Master's Hand

Who were the Masters? And why are they important?

The “Master’s” were the artists who changed our world view by their brilliance and vision.

Leonardo Da Vinci is the first “Master” that comes to most of our minds. His paintings of the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper are two of the most important works of art to ever be created. With people traveling from all over the world to stand transfixed by the grace of the Mona Lisa’s smile, is it any wonder how he claimed the title of Master?

Michelangelo forever altered the way we think of architecture when he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. His incredible mural of the Creation of Adam made him one of the most influential artists of his time and secured his place in history.

Raphael’s beautiful interpretation of the crucifixion of Jesus in his masterpiece, Mond Crucifixion, conveys a realism that is unmatched by his counterparts. It is this mastery over realism that makes his works some of the finest pieces to come out of Europe and earned him status as a Master.

These three men are considered the trinity of the Renaissance. High praise indeed! Their combined work represents the cultural movement of literature, science, and art that blossomed during this brief but glorious time.

Their hands crafted priceless works of art by delicately brushing canvas to perfection, expertly chiseling marble into fine sculpture and molding raw clay into lifelike form.

Even now, hundreds of years after they left this earth, we are still learning from the wisdom of these Masters. Their magnificence hangs on the walls of the best museums and cathedrals the world has to offer. We view each piece with awe and wonder how such greatness could be achieved. Through their critical thinking and creativity, they have transformed our society.

Yet, even with that level of greatness, they still have nothing on the true “Master”!

As Christians, it is the Holy Trinity of Masters that we look to for our wisdom and truth. Their creativity is beyond human comprehension.  Still, it draws us in and gives us the vision we so desperately yearn for.

devotional 7 Simple Ways to See God's Hand in Your Life

God the Father laid the foundation of the world. When the earth was void and without form, He stretched out His hand and created the brilliant work of art we now call home.

I am He, I am the First,
I am also the Last.
Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth,
And My right hand has stretched out the heavens;
When I call to them,
They stand up together.

                                Isaiah 48:12-13

And His hand wasn’t finished… the Master craftsman molded us like clay into His likeness, making us a vessel for His kingdom.

But now, O Lord, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.

                                Isaiah 64:8

When sin entered the world, it separated us from the Father. His work of art cut off and unfinished, unable to hang on the gallery walls of eternity.

But through the nail-scarred hands of the Son, Jesus Christ, sin no longer holds us in its grasp. We are saved and complete, a work of art worthy of His righteousness. Because of Him, it is finished. And our place in heaven is secure.

and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

                               1 Peter 2:24

Even now, as we struggle in our daily existence, the hands of the Holy Spirit lead us. He is our source of truth and a gift from the Father to help us in our time of need.

It is through the Holy Spirit that the vision of the Master is revealed. His hand draws us to the Father and creates a blank canvas for the Master to paint a beautiful portrait of His design.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

                               John 16:13

The Master’s Hand has done the impossible! He has chipped away the broken pieces of our lives and created a smooth sculpture. Turned our lumps of clay into beautiful pottery. And made a blank canvas into a masterpiece.

STAY TUNED: Every artist has a creative process. And because each one sees the world in a unique way, the process varies from artist to artist. The Old Masters, like those we just discussed, sketched their thoughts before putting paint to canvas. The sculptor, Rodin, made small clay models or plaster casts and then cut them up before taking his ideas to the marble. For me, it starts with one word of scripture and then a color appears.

There are as many variations on the process as there are artists, but creation always starts in the mind. That’s the place where inspiration is free to swirl around until it forms a tangible piece of art.

On Saturday, I’d like to share with you the inspiration behind God’s creative process, because like all artists He has one. And I think it might just surprise you. So, I hope you’ll check back and discover His unique way of seeing the world.

7 Simple Ways to See God’s Hand in Your Life

devotional 7 Simple Ways to See God's Hand in Your Life

There’s an anonymous quote I love. It says… Those who leave everything in God’s hand will eventually see God’s hand in everything.” That’s such a beautiful sentiment and one I can completely get behind.

Because the truth is, the more we look for God in our lives, the more we see Him. He is always at work behind the scenes, molding and shaping us into the people He wants us to become. And He is always protecting and loving us no matter what challenges we face.

Take a moment to imagine what it would be like to see God’s hand in your life.

What does His hand look like in your mind’s eye? Would it change your everyday life if you could see His hand clearer?

We’re all searching for God’s hand. Because at our core we know He is the answer to the problems we face every day. And we know if we could just figure out how to see His hand, our lives would turn around and be changed forever.

You’ve probably heard someone say,” I saw God’s hand in my life!”. It’s a phrase that comes up often in Christian circles, in conversations with other believers, or in testimonies given at church.

But what exactly does it mean to see God’s hand in your life? Is this something you’re supposed to look for? Or is it already there?

So, in our quest to find God’s hand, I decided to write a devotional…

7 Simple Ways to See God’s Hand in Your Life is completely free to download and written to help YOU find God’s hand in YOUR life. In this Bible Study, we’ll explore and answer the burning question, how can I see God’s hand in my life today? As we work our way through this short (and free 😊) Bible Study, we’ll look at six simple ways to see God’s hand in our lives.

#1 Walk Hand in Hand with God

A new beginning starts on day 1! To see God’s hand, take hold of it and learn to walk hand in hand with Him.

#2 Inscribed on His Hand

Day 2 is all about God’s deep and unwavering affection for us. This lesson will reveal the true nature of our relationship with Him.

#3 Protected Under a Mighty Hand

As we discussed before, the struggles we face are real. And the burdens and worry of life are never far away. But on day 3 we’ll discover the answer to life’s troubles and the perfect place to be when they hit us hard.

#4 A Generous Hand

God’s generosity is immeasurable! And His hand goes above and beyond to provide all we need. This is the truth we’ll explore on day 4.

#5 The Strength of God’s Hand

We all have times when we feel weak. But at our lowest, we have the strength of God’s hand to rely on. Day 5 offers us hope for our weakest moments.

#6 Secure in His Hand

It’s human nature to seek safety. On day 6 we’ll talk about where real security comes. I’ll give you one guess… That’s right, it’s God’s hand!

#7 is a Life Changer!

You won’t want to miss this special lesson on day #7. It will change everything you thought you knew about your relationship with Jesus!

I hope you’ll resist the temptation to jump ahead because each of the six lessons leads up to this life-changing truth!

Yah! Jazz hands! High fives! And a big thumbs up! 😊

Seeing God’s hand in everything is a hallmark of Christian life. His hand tells us the story of who He is and how He reaches out to us in our struggles. It’s an image of the divine interaction between God and His people. And it’s God’s characteristics, His very nature, that are on display when we feel His healing touch. And just like the anonymous quote above tells us… The more we leave our problems in God’s hand, the more we’ll see Him working in our lives!

So, if you’re ready, let’s get started on 7 Simple Ways to See God’s Hand in Your Life…

More Inspiring Bible Verses about God's Hands

This post may contain affiliate links. See my full disclosure here.

Last week we looked at some Inspiring Bible verses about God’s Hands. There are so many, honestly, it was hard for me to pick just a few. So, this week I’d like to share More Inspiring Bible Verses about God’s Hands.

As we talked about then, hands are a constant in my life. They play an important part in my artwork. Each piece begins with a word that reminds me of who God is. From there I place pictures of hands into the art to spell out that unique word in American sign language. Without these pictures, my art wouldn’t exist.

And these pictures wouldn’t exist without the person posing for them. They’re my father’s hands and that makes them extra special to me. Plus, he thinks it’s kinda funny being a hand model. 😊  He didn’t see that one coming.

My father’s hands have done so many things for me over the years. When I was young, his hand took mine as we walked down the sidewalk together, keeping me close and protected. Later, his hands held me up and kept my head above water while I learned to swim in my grandparent’s backyard pool. During the terrible teen years, his hand grabbed the steering wheel and kept me from veering into oncoming traffic as he taught me how to drive. (Whew, thanks for that one, Dad!) And now as an adult, his hands are still there guiding me. Hey, they’re even in my artwork! If you asked him about these things, he’d say he was just doing what dads do, loving and supporting their kids as they make their way through life.

Yes, A father’s hands do so many things. And our Heavenly Father’s hands are no different. In times of trouble, God’s hands take care of us and give us shelter. When we feel down, defeated or all alone, they comfort us. When we don’t know what comes next, they mold and shape us into our future selves. And when we feel weak, they offer us the strength to keep going. Why? Because that’s what our loving Heavenly Father does. His hands are there for us through all of life ups and downs. Nothing is too big for Him to handle. And nothing is too small for Him to notice.

As you read these verses, look closing at what God has to say to you. Can you see His hands in your life? I hope so. And I pray that you will find comfort and encouragement in God’s hands today.

God’s hands take care of us

And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;
In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”

                              Isaiah 49:2

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Inspiring Bible Verses about God’s Hands

There are so many Bible verses about God’s hands! Each one reminds me that God is present in our lives, even when we can’t feel His loving touch. That truth has inspired me to create Master’s Hand Collection, a series of Christian artwork that uses sign language to depict God’s hand guiding us through life. As you might already suspect, I spend a great deal of time thinking about hands. How to pose, photograph, and place them into my artwork. Hands are a constant in my life. But it’s more than just hands, they are God’s hands that fill my mind. Every scripture I read about God’s hands inspires me to create and to be creative. At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
