His Indescribable Gift 2 Corinthians 9:15 Devotional

In this 2 Corinthians 9:15 devotional, we’ll discover the greatest Christmas gift ever given and how we can receive this precious present this holiday season. Let’s unwrap the deep meaning of God’s inexpressible gift and reflect on the love and grace behind it. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, we’ll take a closer look at the Apostle Paul’s message to the Corinthian believers and the impact of God’s indescribable gift in our lives today.

Thanks Be to God for His Unspeakable Gift

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
2 Corinthians 9:15 New King James Version

The Apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 9:15 are full of praise and awe. In this one short verse, Paul expresses deep gratitude for the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. But what exactly is this indescribable gift? And why does Paul choose the word “indescribable” to describe it?

The truth is, God’s gift of salvation, through His Son, surpasses any words we can use to fully capture its worth. As much as we may try to explain it, Christ Jesus, the ultimate gift, is so magnificent, so life-changing, that it’s truly beyond adequate description. Paul, with the mind of an inspired believer, reaches for the highest form of expression he can find to communicate the value of God’s gift, but even he admits that it defies our full understanding.

What is God’s Indescribable Gift?

The greatest Christ gift we have ever received is Jesus Himself! This beautiful Christmas Bible verse from 2 Corinthians 9:15 tells of the perfect gift and sacrifice of our Savior.

When we read, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift,” we’re reminded that God’s gift of salvation comes through faith in His Son. And Jesus gave us His love on the cross. It’s a gift we can never earn or reciprocate, but praise be to God, we can receive His unspeakable free gift of grace!

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas let’s take a moment to reflect on Second Corinthians, chapter nine, and the meaning of God’s indescribable gift in our lives every day.

The Meaning of 2 Corinthians 9:15

The meaning of 2 Corinthians 9:15 is clear, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection we can receive the gift of salvation through faith in Him. It’s a gift that defies logic because no matter what we do, we’ll never deserve this great gift. But God loves us so much, that He sent His Son to die on the cross in our place. This gift of grace is better than anything we’ll find under the tree this Christmas. And it’s the best thing we’ll ever receive, even if a diamond necklace in a pretty little box, or a brand-new car with a giant bow is waiting for us to unwrap!

Paul wrote his second letter to the Corinthian church to encourage and uplift them, but this passage holds a special importance because it speaks of the greatest gift ever given, God’s own Son. This is where Paul introduces the idea of God’s indescribable gift, the free gift of eternal life through Jesus.

Paul’s message of generosity is also in 2 Corinthians 9:15. He speaks to the Corinthian believers about being cheerful givers and reminds them that their offerings serve to meet the needs of others and to bring thanksgiving and glory to God. IPaul draws the comparison between worldly good things and God’s unspeakably precious gift of salvation, given through the death of Christ Jesus.

The message to the church of Corinth was clear, their act of giving was important, but it pointed to an even greater reality of the surpassing grace of God given through His Son. Paul’s words were meant to help them, and us today, to understand that no offering we make can ever match God’s generous offering in giving His Son for the forgiveness of sins.

As Christians, our generosity should mirror our Heavenly Father’s, showing the world the indescribable gift of forgiveness and grace we’ve received.

God’s Surpassing Grace

God’s indescribable gift, the gift of Christ, is a reflection of His surpassing grace. Grace is undeserved favor, and this gift is the most striking instance of God’s grace at work in the lives of His children. By offering His Son, God made a way for us to have a new life and a restored relationship with Him. This free gift of God is available to anyone who believes in Jesus, and it’s a gift that gives us eternal life and glory in His presence.

By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

God’s Hand in the Ultimate Gift

Reflecting on 2 Corinthians 9:15, we see God’s hand at work in every detail of His plan of salvation. From the Old Testament prophecies to the New Testament fulfillment of them, the gift of Jesus was carefully planned and lovingly given by our Heavenly Father. This was not a last-minute Christmas day gift… it was a gift God had prepared from the foundation of the world.

Just as God’s hand is present in the story of salvation, it’s also at work in our lives every day. Through the Holy Bible, we learn that God’s Word became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. And in the act of giving His Son, we see the ultimate expression of God’s love for us.

The apostle Paul writes of God’s love in this scripture.

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Romans 8:32 NKJV

This verse reminds us that if God was willing to give us His most precious gift, His own Son, He’ll continue to bless and care for us in every area of our lives. His hand of provision is constantly guiding us, just as it was guiding the early church in different places around the world.

God’s Gift to the Body of Christ

The Church as a whole is called the body of Christ, and as His body, we’re recipients of God’s most generous gift, His Son. This inexpressible gift unites believers across time and space, from the Corinthian church to local churches today. We’re all connected through the love of God and the gift of eternal life we receive in Jesus’ name.

Just as God’s hand is seen in the story of salvation, His hand is also at work in our daily lives. Every good work we do, every act of kindness, and every time we extend grace to others is a reflection of God’s gift to us. When we share the good news of Christ, we’re carrying out the Great Commission and spreading the message of God’s indescribable gift to a world in need of His grace.

The Unspeakable Free Gift of God’s Grace

Paul’s reference to the “unspeakable free gift” or “indescribable gift of God” is one of the most powerful moments in the New Testament. It’s the strongest argument for the love of God, because it reveals how far He was willing to go for us. The gift of Christ isn’t just a spiritual gift, it’s the very heart of God’s grace. And that grace transforms everything about us once we accept Jesus as our Savior.

When we receive this indescribable gift, we become true believers, adopted as children of God. We receive the forgiveness of sins and eternal life in heaven with Him for all eternity. The whole arrangement of salvation, from Christ’s birth to His death and resurrection, is a testament to God’s grace at work in the world and our lives.

A Gift Beyond Words

Can you remember a Christmas gift you received that just blew your mind?

When I was a teenager, my grandparents gave me what I would call an unspeakable gift. My grandfather, Papa, brought a ring home from the Philippines after World War 2. It was a present for his beloved mother. She wore it for many years until her death. That ring meant so much to my Papa, and he kept it in a special box inside of his desk for many years, only taking it our occasionally to show it off. I loved that ring! And I loved hearing the story of it every time I saw it. When Papa handed me a pretty little box one Christmas Eve, I never expected to see that heart-shaped ring inside. But there it was! It’s a gift that I treasure. Now that he’s gone, it reminds me of Papa’s love and care for me. And it’s my turn to keep it in a special box and show it off with pride.

The truth is, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to give expensive gifts at Christmas, piling them up under the tree all December long. But no gift, no matter how carefully chosen or beautifully wrapped, can compare to the gift of eternal life given to us by our Heavenly Father. The free gift of salvation is the most precious gift we’ll ever receive. It’s a gift that can’t be measured or fully understood, but it’s one we’re invited to accept and treasure every day of the year.

Different versions of the Word of God use words like inexpressible, indescribable, or unspeakable, to describe this amazing gift. But whatever word you use the meaning remains the same, it’s a gift beyond words, given by a generous God whose love knows no bounds.

Living as Generous Givers

Paul’s letter to the Corinthians encourages us not only to receive God’s gift but also to live as cheerful givers. While there’s no way we can ever give as generously as God did when He gave us His Son, we can follow His example in our own lives by giving to those in need and sharing God’s love with the world.

In the same way that God’s gift was unspeakably precious, our good deeds, done in Jesus’ name, can bless other people. When we give to the less fortunate, or when we serve others with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, we; ‘re demonstrating the love of God and pointing people to the indescribable gift of salvation.

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 English Standard Version

Meeting the Needs of Others

Paul reminds the Corinthian believers that their generous offering was going to meet the needs of others. This act of giving was bigger than providing for daily needs or creature comforts, it was an act of love that pointed to the spiritual gift of God’s grace. We have the same opportunity to serve others that the Corinthians did. When we give with a cheerful heart, we become a part of God’s plan to bless people and share His grace with a lost world.

Reflecting on God’s Greatest Gift This Christmas

As we approach Christmas day, let’s take time to reflect on the indescribable gift of God. The birth of Jesus was the beginning of a story that changed the world forever. Through His life, death, and resurrection, we’ve been given the greatest gift… the gift of eternal life. This Christmas, as we celebrate with our loved ones and exchange gifts, let’s remember the most precious gift of all, the gift of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

What Can We Give in Return?

Even Though we can never repay God for the gift of Christ, we can offer our lives as an act of worship, just as our Loving Savior did.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Romans 12:1 New International Version

In this verse, we’re called to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is our spiritual act of worship. When we live in gratitude for God’s gift, we become generous givers, not only in material things but in our time, love, and service to others.

The greatest gift we’ve ever received calls for us to respond in faith, love, and obedience. As we celebrate the indescribable gift of God this Christmas, let’s commit to living in a way that reflects His love and grace to the world around us.

A Gift Too Wonderful for Words

Let’s look at Paul’s exclamation of praise one more time. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” Really, the gift of Jesus Christ is too wonderful for words. It’s the most generous gift, the ultimate expression of God’s love and grace, and it’s offered freely to anyone who will receive it. As we celebrate this Christmas season, let’s continually give thanks for the unspeakable free gift of salvation, made possible through Jesus Christ.

Even if we struggle to fully comprehend or describe its value, we can embrace this gift with grateful hearts. In return, we’re called to share the love of Christ with others, becoming cheerful givers of the grace we’ve so freely received.

May this Christmas be a time to reflect on God’s indescribable gift and to live out His love in ways that bring glory to His name in your life. I truly hope it excites and inspires you for the celebration of the birth of Christ! Blessings, love, and peace to you during this glorious season!

Merry Christmas!
