What is the Meaning of an Easter Egg? John 11:25

This time of year, you might wonder… What is the meaning of an Easter egg? So, in this John 11:25 devotional, we’ll find out where this tradition comes from and why it matters to Christians during the holy season.

Easter is almost here! And as always, it promises to be a memorable one!

Cute rabbits and chocolate easter eggs dance in our minds. In our house and our church, we’re preparing for this special day. The decorations are out and the baskets are being filled.

For Christians around the world, Easter is THE holiday. It’s the day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. Without this holiday Christianity wouldn’t exist and there wouldn’t be a reason to celebrate at all.

But thankfully for all of us, Jesus did overcome the grave and give us a reason to celebrate on Easter Sunday and every day!

And a big part of our celebration is the annual Easter egg hunt.

Egg decorating is top of the list of fun things to do. Soon, we’ll hard-boil eggs to dye them or fill plastic eggs with jellybeans and chocolate.

The kids will have a lot of fun decorating the eggs with pretty designs. And we’ll have just as much fun hiding them and watching the kids hunt for the precious little things. Their faces lighting up in glee when they see the pastel colors peeking out from the green grass.

Easter Egg Meaning

But is there a deeper meaning behind this Easter tradition? And what is the meaning of an Easter egg?

Traditional Easter eggs represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the new life we have in Him. That’s why they are also called resurrection eggs.

The boiling symbolizes the sealing of the tomb where Jesus was laid. And the cracking of the egg is a symbol of Jesus’s resurrection, bursting forth in victory over death.

John 11:25 Meaning

The words of Jesus in John 11:25 tell us the importance of His resurrection. So, let’s read them together…

I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?

                                                  John 11:25-26 NKJV

With this one statement, Jesus told us so much about Himself and about our identity in Him as Christians.

I am the resurrection and the life…

Jesus is the resurrection. It was by His own power that He conquered death and rose from the grave. And because of the resurrection we can have forgiveness of sin and confidence in our future in heaven with Him one day.

Jesus is the life. Through His resurrection, Jesus gave us a new life we can experience through our belief in Him.

He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live…

Physically we will all die, it’s just a fact. But spiritually, we have a choice of where we want to spend eternity.

If we chose to follow, Jesus we will live in heaven forever with Him! If we chose not to follow Jesus, then we won’t have this promised spiritual life after death and we will be condemned to hell.

Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die…

We should be living our lives here on earth for Jesus. And we should be spreading the good news of salvation in Jesus to everyone around us.

My pastor recently put it in perspective by sharing this thought. “Jesus is the headline, we are just the paperboy.” I love that statement! It speaks volumes to me and makes me see my role so much clearer.

Do you believe this?…

God is always concerned with the condition of our hearts. And with this simple question, Jesus is prompting us to take action!

What is the condition of our hearts? Do we believe and trust in Jesus? Are we certain about where we will go when we die? Have we given our lives over to Jesus? Are we living for Him right here and right now?

These are the questions that we need to answer before we can move forward.

I hope that you will take the time during this Easter holiday to answer these questions in your life. To really nail down what motivates you.

What does the Easter Bunny have to do with Jesus?

The Easter Bunny is another fun tradition we share during the spring season. They’re everywhere! On store shelves and in popular Easter movies.

But how does a cute Easter bunny hopping around and leaving chocolate easter eggs in your yard tie into the Easter story?

Well, the simple answer is, it doesn’t have anything to do with Jesus or the religious Easter holiday we observe as Christians.

Most likely the Easter bunny as we know it today is a twist on a pagan belief from long ago when people believed in a goddess that took on the form of a rabbit. If you’re interested you can read more about the origins of the Easter Bunny in this article from crosswalk.com.

I know, it’s a bummer. But let’s not let it keep us from enjoying the season of hope Easter brings.

For me, I see the Easter Bunny as a symbol of springtime. Because that’s when the bunnies show up in my backyard and take up residence under my lilac bush.

They bring me so much joy as I watch them lounging under its purple flowers, munching on the tall grass, and playing with each other. So, it’s hard for me to think of them as anything but joyful.

However, I think we should always defer to the Bible and its teaching. And during this time of celebrating the death of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, let’s remember the truth of what this holiday means for us and our salvation.

Because it’s all about Jesus! Everything else pales in comparison.
